Brand Transparency Helps Rebuild Consumer Trust

“We heard you, and we got it wrong” is becoming the boldest move in marketing. Burger King is publicly admitting it drifted away from the “hold the pickle, hold the lettuce — have it your way” promise that built the brand, joining a growing list of companies choosing to fall on the sword rather than quietly rebrand. Domino’s did it with self-deprecating ads about its own pizza. Cracker Barrel walked back its logo redesign after customer backlash. And Coca-Cola wrote the original playbook in 1985, when New Coke failed so badly the company brought back Coca-Cola Classic. The bet is that consumers will forgive a mistake faster than they’ll forgive a company pretending it never happened.
